  3. |John and the Pharisees|9
  4. Jesus had been a carpenter for quite
  5. a few years when he heard that his
  6. cousin John had begun to preach near
  7. the Jordan River, east of Jerusalem. 
  8. John lived simply: he ate wild honey
  9. and grasshoppers (which are actually
  10. a good source of protein), and he
  11. wore a rough coat made of camels'
  12. hair.
  13.  
  14. His message was simple, too.  John
  15. told people to repent (turn back to
  16. God) so that their sins would be
  17. forgiven.  And when people said,
  18. "Yes, I want to obey God," John would
  19. baptize them in the Jordan River.
  20. That is why he was called John the
  21. Baptist.
  22.  
  23. It was surprising how many people
  24. came from Jerusalem to listen to
  25. John.  But when the |Pharisees|1 came
  26. to see him |gum|4, he called them a
  27. bunch of snakes who were trying to
  28. sneak away from God's anger.  He told
  29. them that being a Jew wasn't enough
  30. -- not even being a Pharisee and
  31. keeping the law was enough!  They
  32. had to prove that they had repented
  33. by doing good deeds!
  34.  
  35. John knew that the people were won-
  36. dering if he was the Messiah.  But he
  37. kept telling them |brick|5, "I'm not the
  38. |Messiah|2 -- but he's coming after
  39. me, and he will baptize you with the
  40. Holy Spirit instead of with water."

  43. But then, one day, John looked at the
  44. people listening to him, and he saw
  45. Jesus standing in the crowd.  He
  46. pointed to Jesus and said, "Look, the
  47. Lamb of God, who takes away the sin
  48.  
  49. of the world!  He is the one I was
  50. talking about!"
  51.  
  52. And then Jesus asked John to |baptize|d
  53. him (even though he did not need to
  54. repent!), and when John did, the sky
  55. opened and the Spirit of God came
  56. down like a dove and rested on Jesus.
  57. And a voice came from heaven that
  58. said:  "This is my Son; I am very
  59. pleased with him."
